What part of this do the catholics not understand?

If the catholic church had cleaned up its heresies and sins such as nepotism and the selling of indulgences when Luther had pointed them out, the Protestant branch of Christianity would not exist today.So really the catholic church cannot blame the Protestants or complain when they wanted to fix things.So why can't catholics understand and accept this?
