the same thing happened to me. i was together with my boyfriend for 9 months and i left him to be with someone else. i can't stop thinking about him and i just want to be back with him but i can't. he was sometimes too predictable but i didnt care. i think like you did, he moved on and he really did love you. rumors aren't always true and if you love him you would trust him and stay with him.
