Why is god's perfect justice to torture people to death ?

So god has killed untold numbers of people and always in some horrific slasher flick kind of way...Wouldn't a loving god, if he had to, just make it so you didn't wake up one day. What do you suppose will be gods reason for torturing people to death instead of just a nice painless death...
