Pre-medical studies before pre-optometry?

I'm a junior getting ready to apply to college in the fall. I want to, ultimately, be an ophthalmologist. As an undergrad would I have to undergo a pre-medical course of study or pre-optometry? It seems like taking biology and chemistry and anatomy in a pre-medical course first would make more sense before going on to specifically pre-optometry, but I don't really know. Can anyone clear things up for me?
