How can I get my boyfriend to kiss better without telling him that he's bad?

When we make out, he puts his lips over mine, instead of putting them against mine. This gets a lot of slobber on my face. How can I get him to put his lips ON mine without telling him? Is there anything I could do while kissing to prevent this?
